Today we are going to talk about Yoga and Thyroid disorders. Thyroid disorders can be of many types but the two most prevalent ones are: Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) and Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). Before you start practicing yoga for thyroid disorders, it is highly recommended that you consult your doctor and that you understand the following yoga asanas(poses) as a tool on coping with the symptoms better and not as a substitute to medication.

Recommended asanas for Hypothyroidism:

  1. Shoulder Stand (Sarvangasana) is the most recommended posture in this condition as it It stimulates the thyroid gland to function properly because of the pressure effect and also helps stimulate other glands in the head region, such as pituitary and pineal glands, which also have an indirect control on the functioning of the thyroid gland.

  2. Inverted Pose (Viparitakarani)One-legged Forward Bend (Janu Shirasasana)

  3. Fish Pose (Matsyasana)

  4. Plow Pose (Halasana)

  5. Cat Stretch (Marjariasana)

  6. Fast-paced Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskara A & B) can help patients control their weight.

  1. Bridge Pose (Setubandhasana)

  2. Cat Stretch (Marjariasana)

  3. Child Pose (Shishu asana)

  4. Corpse Pose (Shavasana)

  5. Slow-paced Surya Namaskara have soothing effect to the body
